MOSFET: the technological revolution of regulators

The MOSFET transistor amplifies electronic signals. This technology has transformed the concept of the three-phase regulator. For many years, conventional regulators used silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCR) to divert excess energy from the generator to ground, maintaining the battery voltage. This principle works well for small and medium displacement thermal engines. However, the new regulator technology based on MOSFET transistors is becoming popular due to its optimal performance and many other advantages.

The energy demand of modern motorcycles and quads is continuously increasing due to additional electronic modules: fuel injection, high-efficiency lighting, and multiple accessories. This requires significant energy from the generator. The traditional regulator cannot meet this demand due to its low energy efficiency. The internal losses of the regulator lead to overheating and damage when conducting currents over 35A. The traditional regulator has reached its limits and is not recommended for high-displacement vehicles with high energy consumption.

A conventional regulator suffers from high voltage drop (around 1.5V at 35A), as it operates like a power diode. As the current increases, the power dissipated (heat) grows linearly. With the new MOSFET regulators, the voltage can be modulated like a controlled switch, featuring a different semiconductor architecture that makes them more efficient in energy management. When active, it operates at high power and offers a very low resistance that diverts all excess current from the generator to ground. Therefore, the voltage drop is very low (less than 0.2V at 35A), and heat generation is drastically reduced. This is directly related to less heating of the device and a longer lifespan for the regulator.

The MOSFET technology has been continuously improving for several years, thanks to its widespread application in the electronics industry. The integration of semiconductor techniques offers superior power in compact spaces with excellent efficiency. It also allows for faster switching, increased reliability, and optimal control under adverse conditions.

MOSFET regulators use improved current rectifier diodes with an extremely low voltage drop, which helps prevent overheating. The internal controller has been completely redesigned to meet driving needs. The battery voltage is continuously monitored to adjust the output current in various energy consumption situations. The new electronic control avoids the use of linear ignitions, reduces the number of connections, and simplifies wiring topology. It also incorporates a low-power sleep mode that prevents battery charge loss when the vehicle is not running. A MOSFET regulator can increase the output current up to 50A, offering optimal voltage regulation and additional benefits: reduced heat, high efficiency, and advanced electronic control. This new technology is the best option for managing the vehicle's charging system.
